McCready And Kirchmeyer To Meet Soon
Rollend Kirchmeyer, giant member of the American wrestling team, is anxious to meet Earl McCready. Kirchmeyer and McCready, it so happens, were fellow-students at the Oklahoma Agricultural College, but since McCready left there to embark upon his professional wrestling career the paths of the two men have not crossed. McCready was a year ahead of Kirchmeyer and was a full-blown heavyweight while the latter could, and did for competition purposes, train down to the cruiserweight division. Although the pair were not competitive rivals there was plenty of quiet rivalry in their work-outs together. According to Kirchmeyer, the results in these were pretty inconclusive, depending upon which man happened to be most “on his game.” NOT LONG TO WAIT Consequently the tall man from Oklahoma is looking forward to the day when he and McCready come to grips for the first time in the professional ring. Incidentally he is fully confident as to the result. Nor will he have long to wait, as McCready is due in Wellington on June 23. Kirchmeyer, as a result of his wrest-' ling in amateur tournaments, has enough medals to dress himself in—at least he would have if there were not quite so much of him. Anyway, they number 86, and would make a numismatist’s heart glow. He was in the American team which went to Amsterdam in 1928 to compete in the Olympic Games but was unfortunate in being put out with a busted knee which kept him out of wrestling for some months after his return. It was at these Games, of course, that Ed Don George won the heavyweight title from McCready, and Kirchmeyer says he could never understand how McCready came to be beaten. He looked to be unbeatable in his class. While at the college Kirchmeyer concentrated mainly on football and wrestling. In the summer he competed in field athletics —the discus, the shot, the javelin, and the high jump.
