STABLE’S FINE RECORD

HAZLETT JUMPERS AT WINGATUI EL CABALLO MAY FINISH TREBLE The double success of El Caballo at the winter meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club at present in progress, recalls that jumpers raced by Messrs J. S. and W. E. Hazlett have compiled a very fine record at Wingatui in recent years. El Caballo has won in his only two starts at the meeting and he will be one of the favourites for the Dunedin Steeplechase to be run on the final day. The only other jumper representing the stable racing at the meeting is Baitruin, who contested the Otago Hurdle Race the first day. At the 1935 meeting the Hazlett stable was represented by Graball, too won the big steeplechase each day. On each occasion he was ridden by. A. J. Peart. The first day he carried 9.10 in winning the Otago Steeplechase as a novice. He won the Wingatui Steeplechase with 10.8 and the Dunedin Steeplechase with 11.4. Very few horses have been capable of winning such a treble but El Caballo may do so before the meeting ends. At the 1936 meeting the Hazlett brothers won the Otago Hurdle Handlcap with Signaller, who was also placed in both his other starts at the meeting. Signaller won the Otago Hurdles again the following year when Golden Lap won the June Hurdles. Last year Burwood won the Tahuna Steeplechase, the Wingatui Steeplechase on the second day and finished second to Bally Brit on the third day. At this meeting Signaller finished third in the Otago Steeplechase and the three-year-old Wild Irishman was second to Corban in the June Hurdles. The record of the' Hazlett stable in jumping events at Wingatui in June is no doubt a par- : ticularly fine one. THE SAFE VOYAGE CASE OFFICIAL FINDING OF COMMITTEE The official finding of the Judicial Committee which heard the protest of P. P. McKay, of Wyndham, owner of Royal Chief, who ran second to Safe Voyage in the Invercargill Hamess Trot at the Southland Racing Club’s winter meeting, against the first stake being awarded to Mr R. Mee, of Becks, owner of Safe Voyage on the grounds that Safe Voyage was not trained by J. Docherty as stated in the nomination form, is as follows:— (1) That the horse Safe Voyage was in point of fact trained by J. Docherty; (2) That the owner of Safe Voyage was a perfectly innocent party and that if the Committee’s finding set out in the preceding paragraph should be reversed by a higher tribunal no blame whatever is attachable to Mr Mee; and (3) That the protest cannot be; regarded in any way as frivolous and that when the protest was lodged Mr McKay, as the result of information conveyed to him, had ample grounds for a bona fide belief that Docherty ' had not been the trainer of Safe Voyage and the committee strongly recommends that the protest deposit fee of £5 be refunded to Mr McKay. GOLF NIGHTCAPS CLUB JUNE MEDAL HANDICAP The June medal handicap of the Nightcaps Golf Club was played during the week-end and resulted in a win for A. Smeaton with a net 72—the course bogey. The following were the best scores:— A. Smeaton 86-14-72, A. Cochrane 83-9-74, W. McElligott 89-13-76, E. Goodall 97-18-79, S. Giles 90-10-80, J. Johnstone 91-11-80, M. Grant 90-10-80.
