PAY ROLL OF £500 STOLEN

CLERK ATTACKED ON WAY TO POWER STATION MELBOURNE, May 27. A clerk employed by the Mildura City Council, a large provincial centre 360 miles north-west of Melbourne, was held up and robbed of £5OO yesterday. The victim was Eric Allen, who was driving to the council’s power station to pay the men when he was hailed by a man known to him asking him for a lift. After travelling a short distance the man struck Allan a violent blow, knocking him from the car. Allah said later that the man made off in the car.

The robber, however, eventually mistook the road, as the car was later found bogged in a small swamp. Several boys who saw the car enter the swamp said that a man jumped out carrying a heavy bag. Allan immediately telephoned to the police, who an hour later arrested the man in bed at a guest house. The bag was later found in scrub, but it was empty.
