The engagement is announced of Ivy May, only daughter of Mr and Mrs A. F. McAustin, Musselburgh, Dunedin, and Ronald, second son of Mr and Mrs C. Double, Lindisfarne. Miss E. Calder, Dunedin, is the guest of Lady Anderson, Victoria Park. Miss M. Emerson, Rimu, is spending a holiday with Mrs P. Hancox, Papatotara.

Mr and Mrs L. Harris, Dunedin, are the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Steers, Rimu.

Misses E. and N. Story, Venlaw, have been spending a few days in Dunedin as the guests of their sister, Mrs J. L. Williams.

Mrs A. E. W. McDonald, who accompanied her husband to Wellington at the beginning of the week, will return on Sunday. Mrs K. H. Allen, Avenal street, returned on Thursday evening from a visit to Dunedin.

Mrs A. Muir, Christchurch, who has been the guest of Mrs J. A. Lush, Don street, has returned north. Miss Cara Pinckney, who has been visiting Hawke’s Bay and Timaru, will return to her home at Glenaray at the week-end.

Mr and Mrs T. Treacy, South Dunedin, arrived in Mataura on Thursday

evening and are the guests of Mr and Mrs N. McLeod, Dover street.

The Dominican Ex-pupils will hold their eleventh annual ball on Monday, June 12, when the feature of the evening will be the presentation of the debutantes to the Rt. Rev. James Whyte, Bishop of Dunedin. Mrs A. S. Elworthy, wife of the chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club, was elected a life member of the club at the annual meeting on Wednesday, < n the motion of Mr W. E. Simes, which was seconded by Mr George Gould. Mr Simes said that Mrs Elworthy had done a vast amount of work for the club, and it was difficult to realize how wide were her duties, on and off the course. The motion was carried unanimously.

FAREWELL PARTY FOR MISS L. HEYWOOD A good number of friends and residents gathered in the Taramoa hall recently to bid farewell to Miss L. Heywood, who is leaving the' district for England shortly. Items were given by Messrs C. Brown and A. O’Connor and the Misses M. and F. Millar, while extras - for dancing were played by Messrs J. Kerr and M. Hamilton. During the evening Mr G. McDowall presented the guest of honour with a travelling rug and a travelling bag and conveyed to her, on behalf of those present, best wishes for a safe voyage home. Mr W. FOVEAUX CLUB OPENS SEASON

OFFICERS AND ENGINEERS ENTERTAINED The Foveaux Social Club, Bluff, opened the 1939 season on Wednesday evening with a function in Barber s hall at which the officers and engineers of the Rotorua and Port Alma were the guests of honour. There was a big attendance and the function was very successful. Miss Vincente Brown and Mr R. Ashwell supplied the music, and Mr J. E. Beaton acted as master of ceremonies. The hostesses were Mesdames A. C. McKillop and H. J. Burke. Several novelty dances were held. Among those present were Captain F. J. Callan and Mrs Callan, Mr and Mrs A. C. McKillop, Mr and Mrs 11. PRESENTATIONS MADE AT WYNDHAM

PLUNKET NURSE RETIRES Nurse Burnett, who is severing her connection with Plunket nursing work to live in retirement a' Gore, was met on Thursday afternoon by the iel P _ bers of the local committee and the mothers who attend at the rooms each week. The occasion was her last visit to Wyndham as Plunket nurse. Mrs R. McLellan, president, expressed the regret they all felt at losing such a capable nurse and remarked that her place would not be easy to fill. They all joined in wishing her happiness in her retirement and hoped she would visit them occasionally. As a parting memento they asked her to accept a cheque. Mrs D. Macpherson, who had known Nurse Burnett since she first came to Wyndham, expressed admiration and appreciation for the work she had done among them and wished her a happy retirement. , , , In reply Nurse Burnett thanked the members for their gift and their kind Nurse Burnett was also entertained at afternoon tea by the Edendale branch on Monday afternoon, when some 30 members were present. Mrs T. Scoular and many other mothers who have attended the rooms during the 10 years Nurse Burnett has been visiting Edendale, referred in appreciative terms to the high esteem in which she was held by all and asked her to accept an eight-day chiming clock as a parting gift After supporting remarks had been made by Mrs Coker (Brydone) and Miss Gordon, Nurse Burnett replied.
