DOG TRIALS AT NIGHTCAPS

TWO MORE EVENTS COMPLETED Two events, the long pull and the maiden hunt, were completed yesterday at the annual dog trials of the Nightcaps Sheep Dog Trials Association. The weather was very good and there was a good crowd of spectators to watch the keen and interesting competitions. In the long pull there were 32 competitors and the maiden hunt was contested by 23 dogs. A competition for the best heading dog was won by Mr J. B. Queale’s Bess. This was contested by the first and second dogs in the three events completed. The trials will be concluded today with the open huntaway. Details of yesterday’s results are: LONG PULL. Time limit 10 minutes. First prize £6 and Southland Frozen Meat Company’s £5/5/cup and J. H. Geddes and Sons’ goods value £l/5/-; second prize £3 and Reins Ltd.’s trophy; third prize £2/10/- and T. M. Rankin’s trophy; fourth prize £2 and Aitcheson Ltd.’s trophy; fifth prize Andrew Lees’ goods value £1; sixth prize Hallenstein Ltd.’s goods value 10/-. J. B. Queale’s Bess, 53pts 1 F. Golightly’s Nell, 50pts 2 L. Dawson’s Kip, 48pts 3 F. Golightly’s Jed, 46pts 4 E. P. Healey’s Lass, 45pts 5 J. T. Brass’s Spark, 44pts 6 Bess went out to the right and came in a little on cast, recovered and headed, after moving sheep in one minute. She pulled in a straight line at a steady pace to enter the front of the ring and hold well. She completed ri six minutes 10 seconds. Nell cast to the right, came in a little on cast but was redirected and made a slightly short head in one minute. She pulled in a good line but stopped twice on the way. She held well in the ring and completed in five minutes. Kip cast to the right and went out rather slowly. He made a fair head in one minute 35 seconds. He let the sheep somewhat off the course to the right in pulling. He held indifferently and completed in six minutes 35 seconds.

Jed cast to the right, went out on a good line but headed a little close, moving the sheep in 55 seconds. He let the sheep off the course to the left and entered the side of the ring. He allowed the sheep out of the ring twice and completed in five minutes 55 seconds.

Ramsay’s Mack, 40pts 5 Maid hunted on a fair line to the first poles then, through the poles, kept a good line to the second poles and likewise to the third. She was through in five minutes five seconds. Sweep hunted through the first poles in fair line and continued on to the second poles where he got a little out of position. He was off the line to the left approaching the third poles. He recovered and hunted through in five minutes 15 seconds. Bounce let the sheen off the course to the right past the first poles. He headed and pulled back and hunted through. He kept in a good line through the second poles. He was slightly off the line approaching the third poles, but recovered and hunted through in five minutes.
