The Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash), who is on his way to England, was due to leave New York last Thursday on the Queen Mary, and expects to arrive in London on Tuesday next The Hon. F. Jones (Minister of Defence and Postmaster-General) conferred today with a sub-committee of the air raid precautions organization in Auckland. Proceedings were of a private nature. The Mayor of Auckland (Sir Ernest Davis) presided The Minister later visited the naval base at Devonport and the military camp at Narrow Neck. He left for Wellington by the Limited express tonight.—Press Association. 'The Hon. Mr Justice Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy, of Dunedin, who are at present in England, have been travelling since January, and have visited Java, ' Malay States', Burma, India (where a month was spent), Egypt, the South of France, Greece and Turkey. Three weeks were spent in Greece. While in the Mediterranean they made a point of visiting the battle area of the Gallipoli peninsula. They hope to stay in England until Octobei. Scotland has been included in their itinerary, and the return, journey will be made via the United States and Qanada. Lieutenant A. R. Cockerell, of the Defence Department at Invercargill, left for Dunedin by the afternoon express yesterday on departmental business. He will return to Invercargill tonight. Mr L. S. Alsweiler was appointed the representative of the Southland Education Board on the Southland Progress League at the meeting of the board yesterday.

Mr D. Macpherson, of Waianiwa, was elected president of the Southland War Funds Association at the annual meeting. Mr T. Pryde was elected vicepresident. Mr J. J. Hurley, a member of the Canterbury Education Board, who is visiting Invercargill and Bluff on private business, was a visitor at the meeting of the Southland Education Board yesterday. He was given a welcome by the chairman (Mr S. Rice). Mr I. D. Campbell, of Wellington, secretary of the New Zealand Police Association, arrived in Invercargill yesterday afternoon. He discussed departmental affairs with the local authorities and gave a short address to the .constables. Mr A. S. Elworthy, of Pareora, South Canterbury, has been reappointed chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club.

Mr R. J. Philpott, who has retired from the reserves department of the City Council after about 21 years’ service, was met by members of the staff last evening and presented with a fireside chair for himself and a hand-bag for Mrs Philpott. Many members of the staff praised Mr Philpott’s qualities and his services tr the department. Mr E. A. Jones has been appointed genera) manager for the Vacuum Oil Company Pty., Ltd. Mr Jones, who joined the sales staff of the company in 1928, has held a number of important executive positions, including the managership of the Christchurch branch. After a brief period of service in Australia he was arnointed assistant general manager for New Zealand in 1935. Mr Jones, who is well known in business circles throughout _ New Zealand, succeeds Mr J. H. Lindon, who is being promoted to a position in Australia.

Messrs G. R. J. Duthie and H. Mules leave by this morning’s express to take up Public Service appointments in Wellington. Mr L. H. Bird, A.M.Inst.C.E., A.M.I.Mech.E., A.M.N.Z.1.E., of the Dunedin city engineer’s department, has received an appointment with the Tasmanian Government, and will leave Dunedin in June to take up duties in Hobart. A motion of condolence with the relations of Messrs R. L. Byars (Otama), A. Sheat (Morton Mains) and G. Stuart (Brydone), whose deaths had occurred, was passed at the annual meeting of the council of the Southland War Funds Association yesterday Captain A. J. Charman, marine superintendent in the South Island for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company Ltd., is to retire soon at his own request, after completing 49 years of service with the company. He will be succeeded by Captain J. H. Gaskell, former commander of the Shaw Savill liner Mataroa.

Mr J. Kirkness has been appointed to the newly-created position of registrar of the Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. A Master of Com-

merce, Mr Kirkness is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Accountants. He had commercial experience in Wellington before he was appointed to the staff of the Stamp Duties Department, Wellington. For the last three years he has been occupied in commercial accountancy in Wellmgtoii Captain B C B. Brooke, who. r rom 1933 to 1936, with the rank of commander, was naval officer in charge in H.M.S. Philomel at Auck md, has been appointed to command M.S. Bridgewater, an escort vessel on the Africa station. Contain L. C. P. Tudway, D. 5.0., D.S.C., who last year completed two years’ service in command of H.M.S, Leith on the New Zealand station, has been appointed to H.M.S. Wildfire in command, and in charge of the trainin'' establishment at Sheerness.
