AN EGG COSY

This egg cosy can be made in any colour, but it is a good idea to use felts which tone with the china used on the breakfast table. Three pieces of felt in one colour should be cut for the cosy, and the weaving strips should be of a brighter colour to tone. Each piece should be about 2in wide and from 3Jin to

4in long, shaped up to a point at the top, as shown in the illustration. Place the felt for the sides on a piece of board and mark off lines parallel with the bottom at intervals of Jin to Jin, using a piece of French chalk. Now set off marks Jin away from the edges, and then another Jin to give the length of

the cut. Cut through the felt with a sharp knife, but if you are not sure of being able to do this quite accurately use a ruler or a strip of wood as a guide. Cut out the strips for the threading Jin wide, holding the ruler firmly on to the felt so as to get a clean-cut edge. You can mark off the strips with chalk and cut them with scissors, but it is difficult to keep to the line.

The lacing is very simple. All you have to do is to draw the strips in and out of the slots already cut, leaving the pieces at the top to give a decorative effect. Finish off by making a stitch at the ends of the strips and at the top of the cosy, to prevent them from working out.
