MAGISTRATE’S COURT
FRIDAY (Before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M.) Henry James Greer, aged 50 years, a labourer, of Gore, was charged with stealing in or about the month of January 1938 at Riversdale, the sum of £25 in money, the property of the Riversdale Athletic Society. The accused elected to be dealt with summarily and pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant R. Thompson said that the accuser’ v*.s a widower with 13 children. He supported four of his family and the others were in the care of the State. At the time of the offence the accused was secretary of the Athletic Society. , He was given £25 from the society’s funds for expenses incurred at the athletic meeting held at Riversdale in the New Year of 1938. The accused failed to account for this money to the society and converted it to his own use. When the accused was interviewed by Detective J. Hill he admitted the theft. He had never been in trouble before. The accused was convicted and admitted to probation for a neriod of two years, conditic’i’ 1 upon the restitution of the sum of £25, as ordered by the probation officer.
