LUMSDEN

PLUNKET SOCIETY REVIEW OF YEAR’S WORK The tenth annual meeting of the Lumsden branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Plunket Rest Room. Mrs Marshall presided over a good attendance of members from Lumsden, Mossbum, Winton, Balfour and Dipton. Mrs King, of Winton, unveiled a portrait of Sir Truby King which had been hung in the room that day. Mrs Young, of Mossburn, presented Mrs King with a bouquet on behalf of the branch and as a token of appreciation of her long years of service in the work o£ the Plunket Society. , Branch and sub-branch reports and balance-sheets were presented, by the following delegates: Winton, Miss King; Balfour, Mrs McDonald; Dipton, Miss Shand; Queenstown, Mrs Campbell; Mossbum, Mrs Reid; Lumsden, Mrs Campbell. . . Members expressed appreciation ot the sound financial state of the branch as a whole.

The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mrs J. Marshall; vice-presidents, Mesdames Ogilvy, Upchurch and Miss Martin; secretary, Mrs J. Campbell; treasurer, Mrs A. McAlister; subbranch delegates, Winton, Mrs Irwin and Miss Russell, Dipton, Mesdames Murray-Menzies and Shand, Balfour, Mesdames Wilson and McDonald, Mossburn, Mesdames Young and Reid, Queenstown, president and secretary. Lumsden, Mesdames Heath, W. T. Johnson, M. A. Reidy, Clouston. G. Hamilton and Miss McDonald; new members, Mesdames A. Henderson and Plumb; conference delegates, Mesdames Irwin (Winton) and Reid (Mossburn). As this was the last meeting at which Mrs King would be present, Mrs Marshall on behalf of all district members presented her with a token of remembrance and appreciation of the services she had given to the society. Miss King responded on behalf of Mrs King. Nurse White’s report of work done during the year ending March 31 was as follows:—Letters sent, Lumsden 71, out-stations 253; telephone calls, Lumsden 62, out-stations 204; new babies, Lumsden and Athol 22, out-stations 136; visits to homes, Lumsden, Athol ahd Cascade Creek 429, out-stations 723; visits to office, Lumsden and Athol 977, out-stations 4940. A medical examination of pre-school children was carried out in Winton and Queenstown with gratifying results. Mothercraft talks were carried out in seven schools, four to six talks being given in each school. These were to be extended during this year, teachers expressing appreciation of the value of the work done among the girls.

TRAVEL PARTY A travel patty of 17 persons left Lumsden by bus for the Hermitage, Mr Cook, travelling by way of Queenstown, where morning tea was provided, thence through the Kawarau Gorge to Cromwell, where a stop was made for lunch. The next stop was at Omarama for afternoon tea, the party arriving at the Hermitage in time for dinner at night. Next day a trip was njade to Ball Hut, the members of the party experiencing the thrills of travelling over the Tasman Glacier, The next day further trips round the Hermitage were made, the more energetic visitors climbing Mt. Sebastopol. The return journey was made next day by way of Wanaka and the Crown Range, through Queenstown to Lumsden.

' Opportunity was taken of the stop at Eichardt’s Hotel, Queenstown on the return journey to make a piesentation to the organizer, Mrs J. Campbell. Mr G. P. Martin on behalf of the members expressed the pleasure all had derived from the trip and the opportunity given to them to make it. He asked Mrs Campbell to accept a crystal dish as a token of their appreciation. Mrs Campbell replied, plied. Those who made the trip were as follows: Mesdames J. Campbell and G. McKinna (Lumsden), Mr and Mrs G. P. Martin, Messrs Watt, Waters and G. J. Martin (Dipton), Mrs G. McAulpy and Miss McAuley (Mossburn), Misses Marshall and Cooper (Wendonside), Miss Smyth (Mataura), Mrs Reitcheson (Lowther), Mr' and Mrs Rouse, Mrs Wadsworth and Mr Smith (Five Rivers). EUCHRE PARTY The fortnightly euchre organized by the Women’s Committee of the Lumsden Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the club room. There was a fair attendance of the public. Prizewinners were Mrs A. Reidy and J. Menzies. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs F. Smith and S. Graham.
