HORSE SALE AT WINTON

FAIR DEMAND FOR GOOD SORTS FEW BUYERS OPERATING Although there was a good attendance of district farmers there were few buyers at the Winton horse sale yesterday, the first to be held this season. Good horses were in fair demand and sold up to recent rates but poorer sorts were practically unsaleable and passings were frequent. The best price was obtained for a seven-year-old gelding which brought £2B/10/-. A five-year-old gelding realized £26 10/- and the next best price was for a five-year-old mare which sold for £25 10/-. The sale was conducted by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and 30 draught mares and geldings were offered. A quantity of furniture and harness was also sold. The sales were.—

SMALL ENTRY OF SHEEP

STOCK SALE AT OTAUTAU A small entry of sheep and a few pigs were forward for yesterday’s sale at Otautau. Good medium Romney twotdoth ewes made from 28/3 to 28/10, and Romney ewe lambs from 23/6 to 24/8. A few pens of aged ewes realized full market rates. Following were a few of the lines disposed of: ;j. R. Mills sold: Four pigs at 16/6 each, 2 at 30/-. 2 at 27/-, and a crate of hens at 1/-. The Southland Fanners’ Co-operative Association sold: Sixty-eight s.m. ewes at 28/10, 105 stakes at £9, 4 strainers at 12/6, 2 at 12/-, 2 at 11/-, 3 at 9/-, 3 at 11/-, 5 at 9/-, 4 at 4/6, 3 at 9/-, 3 at 5/6. and one dog at £5/5/-. Dalgety and Co., sold: Twenty wethers at 12/- and 61 ewes at 18/6. The National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., sold: Sixty-eight ewe lambsat 18/9, 7 bags of potatoes at 4/- a bag, 30 stakes at 11/-, and 50 at 12/6. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., sold: Sixty-seven ewe lambs at 23/6, 20 at 24/8, 50 lambs at 24/-, and 15 ewes at 2/9.

COMPANY NEWS FAIRYMEAD SUGAR The net earnings of Fairymead Sugar Company, Ltd., Queensland, for the year ended December 31, 1938, at £49,812, showed an increase of £2626 on that for 1937, and was the highest since 1928. The profit is struck after providing £12,090 for depreciation, against £13,294 in the previous year. The final dividend of 5 per cent., makes the year’s distribution 10 per cent., against 9 per cent, in 1937, and requires £49,250. A sum of £4OOO is transferred to reserve; and against £3556 brought in, £llB is carried forward. v G. J. COLES AND COY G. J. Coles and Company, Ltd. Melbourne, have bought Commerce House, Brisbane, headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce. The price is believed to be nearly £50,000. The building has a frontage of 57ft, to a depth of 148Jft. Coles occupy portion of the ground floor. Many of the tenants have leases, and others are protected for at least a year. It is understood, however, that when present leases expire Coles propose to occupy the whole of the building, in order to cope with their expanding business in Brisbane. The company now has more than 80 stores throughout Australia. MARK FOY, LIMITED The net profits of Mark Foy, Ltd., Sydney retail store organization, was £62,004 for the year ended February 28, compared with £61,564 for the previous year. The ordinary dividend at an unchanged rate of 6 per cent, requires £32,422, and preference dividend at the same rate absorbs £16,374. A sum of £13,022 is transferred to general reserve, making that account £120.000.

The Zinc Corporation has declared a dividend of 1/6 a share on preference and ordinary shares and also of 2/- on preference shares for the first half of 1939.
