CHARGE OF SPLITTING RECEIPTS

MAN AND WIFE FINED (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 25. An unusual prosecution was brought against a married couple as landlords in the Magistrate’s Court when they were charged with dividing rent receipts of £3 into separate receipts of £1 10/- for the purpose of avoiding payment of stamp duties. They were Victor and Ruby Alice Sweet, the husband being charged on one count and the wife on five with splitting the receipts for the rent paid by Andrina Kerr Long, who, with her husband and family, occupied a house owned by them. The defence was a denial that the rent was ever paid in more than weekly sums, but the Magistrate found that the Long family paid the rent fortnightly in sums of £3 and fined Sweet and his wife £3 and £2 respectively.
