LEAD TAKEN IN CASH TRANSACTIONS
SALE OF MOTOR-CARS IN SOUTHLAND
The opinion that as far as cash motor-car sales were concerned Southland probably led most of the provinces in New Zealand, was expressed yesterday by the manager of a retail motor firm. This conclusion, he said, was based on personal experience and he remarked that probably 50 per cent, of the sales made by his firm were on a cash basis.
Registrations of motor-cars for March were a record for New, Zealand and inquiries in the city yesterday revealed that the demand for cars, up to tha present time, has been fairly brisk. One manager said that during the last three or four weeks there had been a falling-off in the number of new cars sold and he thought the reason for this was that the public was frightened about the financial position of the country. The supply of some makes of cars had given out and he thought that when the new half-year’s quota arrived the sales would rise considerably. It was stated by the representative of another firm that during the last four or five months the number of second-hand cars sold had decreased, but managers of other firms did not agree with this and one said that, actually, the sales showed an improvement on last year.
