LONG VOYAGE IN CANOE

2000-MILE JOURNEY

LONDON, April 25.

In a collapsible canoe 18 feet long, Mr and Mrs J. Pennington, of Bournemouth, this week left London Bridge on a voyage round England and Wales, about 2000 miles.

Mr Pennington, a salesman, is 24. His wife is 26. This is the first longdistance voyage they have undertaken, and they expect to arrive back at London Bridge in about six months’ time. “We are working with the tides,” said Mr Pennington, “and hope to average about 12 miles a day, camping at night and getting our food by selling postcards. “We are going via the South and Welsh coasts. At Carlisle we are taking a train to Berwick-on-Tweed to start the last lap back to London Bridge from there.”

Mrs Pennington was not quite so keen. “I have done my best to stop my husband,” she said, “but when he bought the canoe about a month ago I agreed to go with him. Our friends have all wished us good luck, but they think we’re crazy.” Mr and Mrs Pennington, who have both given up their jobs, hope to beat the record set up in 1934 by Mr J. Nolan, who paddled 1400 miles, finishing at Oban.
