BURNSIDE STOCK SALE
Fall In Fat Cattle Prices LARGE PROPORTION OF PRIME OX (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 24. There was a general improvement in quality in the 406 fat cattle entered tor the Burnside stock sale today, with a larger proportion than usual of prime ox. The offering was more than sufficient for immediate needs and though butchers bought more heavily than might have been expected and outside graziers also came into the market, prices failed to maintain late levels, the easing being 15/- to 20/- for prime heavy bullocks, while other sorts were even cheaper. Cows and heifers were not in good supply and the easing in their case was about 10/- a head. Prime heavy bullocks made to £l7/7/6, prime £l2/7/6 to £l4/2/6, medium £9/7/6 to £ll/7/6 and light from £7/2/6. Extra prime cows and heifers to £lO/7/6, prime £7/12/6 to £9/2/6. medium £5/12/6 to £6/17/6 and light down to £3/12/6. In the store section vealers Lad a good sale at advanced prices. Other sorts were easier. About 1680 fat sheep were forward, consisting mainly of ewes. Several lots were of exceptional quality, but the wethers forward were mainly of medium ■ descriptions. The reduced price for export mutton did not affect the market, as most of those offered sold to the local trade at later rates. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 28/-, prime 21/- to 24/-, medium 17/6 to 20/- and light down to 14/-. Extra prime ewes made to 19/-, prime heavy to 17/6, prime 13/9 to 15/6, medium 9/9 to 12/6 and light from 7/-. More than 900 fat lambs were offered, but the majority was of medium quality. Butchers took all the heavy sorts, while exporters were operating at full schedule rates. Heavy butchers’ lambs made to 26/-, prime 21/- to 23/-, medium 19/- to 20/6 and light down to 15/9. The entry of 255 fat pigs was more than sufficient for requirements and best baconers sold at £4 5/-. Medium sorts made £3 5/- to £3 15/- and porkers £2 5/- to £3. ADDINGTON MARKET POOR SALE FOR STORE SHEEP (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 24, The weekly market at Addington today was largely confined to fat stock. A station truck lot of two and four-tooth wethers made 13/1, a pen of two-tooth wethers 12/-, and others 9/6 to 10/10. An attractive line of two, four and six-tooth ewes made 13/3 and another of soundmoutheds 8/6. There was little change in the fat lamb market. Butchers’ lambs had a brisk sale at firm rates and export, types went at schedule. The fat sbeep entry was 5000, compared with 4500 last week.
