STARTING A VOGUE FOR WOMEN

IRENE CASTLE DECLARES WAR ON HAIRPINS ’

The historic scene in 1914 when Irene Castle bobbed her long hair and launched the short hair vogue for women the world over, will be authentically depicted in RKO Radio’s “The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle,” in which Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers are starred,

The scene occurred in Mrs Castle’s boudoir in her New York City home, and was the result of her annoyance because the hair pins continually flew out of her hair during fast dance numbers. On this particular evening a hairpin had dropped into her soup following one of her dances and she then and there decided to create a hair style which would not require hair pins. Mrs Castle, who acted as technical adviser on the picture based on her life and that of her late husband, Vernon Castle, has cut her own hair and his never changed the style.
