MATAURA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The monthly meeting of the Mataura Women’s Institute was well attended by members. Mrs S. E. Smith presided and extended a welcome to four new members. . The roll call, “What husbands think of the Women’s Institute” brought several humorous replies. The motto was “A merry heart doth good like medicine.” A motion thanking Mrs W. P. Thorn for making the Anzac wreath was recorded. On behalf of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, Mrs Thompson thanked the Women’s Institute for its donation of stamps. It was decided to enter for the McDougall Cup competition to be held in July. The delegates attending the council meeting of the Eastern District Federation were instructed to vote for one member of each branch. It was left to the Entertainment and Drama Committees to make arrangements for the birthday party, which is to take the form of an evening entertainment. A motion of thanks to those taking part in a recent tableau was moved by Mrs Shorter and carried unanimously. A letter was received from the Red Cross Society stating that another meeting would be held in Mataura in the near future. After the business had been completed, a social evening was held, the guests of the evening being the members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and the Rebekah Lodge. The Entertainment and Drama Committees were responsible for entertaining the visitors.

Those contributing items were: Duet; Mesdames T. Fisher and A. Turner; sketch, Mesdames T. Piercy, A. Turner, W. Brown, Misses C. McConnell and F. Stickle; statue dance, Mrs C. D. Taylor and Miss Stickle. Items were also contributed by the “Gazoo Band,” those taking part being Mesdames A. Turner, C. D. Taylor, Balloch, T. Fisher, Bryant, T. Piercy. VZ. Brown, and Misses E. Thompson and F. Stickle. The accompanists were Mesdames o. E. Smith, A. Turner and T. Piercy., The competitions resulted: Raisin competition, Mesdames Fisher , al l~ White; art gallery competition, Miss E. Thompson; pear ginger, Mrs Piercy 1, Mrs McConnell 2, Mrs Shorter 3 (judges, Mesdames Thom and Burns); best bloom (judge, Mrs Thorn), Mrs R. Dickie 1, Miss Dickie 2, Mrs A. G. Clarke 3; Monte Carlo, Mesdames W. Clearwater and C. D. Taylor. Mrs Burns (W.D.F.U.) and -Mrs Richmond (Rebekah Lodge) expressed thanks for the invitation to be present. The hostesses were Mrs W. Buchanan (convener), Mesdames R. Dickie, V. H. Ball and R. Balloch.
