BIRCHWOOD HUNT

SUCCESSFUL MEET AT ORETI Twenty horses took part at the hunt held by the Oreti branch of the Birchwood Hunt at Oreti on Saturday afternoon. The weather was wet and the going slippery. There were several spills, Master Balboa and Calamure falling down at one fence, and Matchem, ridden by the huntsman (J. Langford), slipping and falling on the flat. The slippery state of the ground caused Poniard to take off badly and he got caught up in wire in a gorse fence. He was not injured. Several novices were seen out and Lochie River, who won three flat races in succession during the past season, performed creditably for his first outing with the hounds. On the whole the standard of jumping was high. The course was laid over the properties of Messrs J. J. Woods and W. G. Woods and the obstacles comprised one road double, two cap fences and six gorse hedges. Two runs were held and many of the followers took part in both.

There was a big number of spectators and during afternoon tea the president of the Birchwood Hunt, Mr J. L. Hazlett, thanked them for their support. He also thanked the property owners. Those who took part were: J. L. Hazlett (acting master) on Captain Webster; J. Langford (huntsman) on Matchem; W. Sheedy (whip) on Polar Star; S. Reid on Captain Reid; A. Burnett on Henry Dawson, Lochie River and Delvane; L. Jones on Liberate; L. J.- Strathearn on El Caballo and King Willow; T. Boyle on Master Balboa and Loch Corrib; W. Boyle on Rotowai; S. Kean on Calamure; R. McKenzie on Lady Barkly; F. Langford on Poniard and La Boca; J. O’Meara on Whirr, Panara and Full Dress. An open jumping competition, over three board fences, resulted;—Matchem (J. Langford) 1, Lady Barkly (S. Reid) 2, Captain Webster (J. L. Hazlett) 3. Also competed: Captain Reid (S. Reid).
