“IMPREGNABLE” NAZI DEFENCES
HITLER IMPRESSED AFTER INSPECTION (Received May 20, 6.30 p.m.) BERLIN, May 19. Herr Hitler, after his inspection of Germany’s western frontier fortifications, issued as the Order of the Day: “The inspection convinced me of the impregnability of our western defences. I thank all who created in the shortest possible time this basis of German security.” Henri Rothery, aged 27, who said he was a deserter from the Nazi’ Black Guards, was arrested at Valenciennes. The police found that he was in possession of secret German military maps and plans of the Siegfried Line, the western frontier defences.
