RIFLE SHOOTING
CITY GUARDS CLUB SATURDAY’S SCORES AT OTATARA The City Guards Defence Rifle Club fired the second stage of the club championship and two ranges of the president’s handicap cup competition at Otatara on Saturday afternoon, 10 shots being fired at 500 and 600 yards. Heavy rain up to the time of starting affected the attendance and the shooting was carried out under unpleasant conditions, a cold, gusty wind blowing throughout. The scoring under the conditions was good. . W. J. Murray, who scored 144 for the three ranges of the first stage, kept up his form and scored 96 for the day, which places him in a strong position with a lead of three points. At 500 yards the top scorer was L. Sproat, a first-year shot, who placed his 10 shots within the 18-inch bull for the possible. J. B. Doake was second with 49 and A. Ford and W. J. Murray followed with 48 each.
At 600 yards W. J. Murray again shot well and headed the list with a good 545555 5 54 5—48, A. Ford 45 and L. Sproat 45 filling -the next two places. Murray headed the day’s aggregate with 48, 48—96, Sproat being second with 50, 45—95.
