WEDDING
BIRSS—HODDINOTT The wedding was solemnized in the First Church on a recent evening of Gladys Mary, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. M. Hoddinott, Waituna, and James William, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. Birss, Otatara. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. N. F. Sansom, of Woodlands, and Mrs A. F. Manning played the organ. While the register was being signed Mrs Dore sang “Bless This House.” The church was decorated by friends of the bride with hydrangeas in pastel blues and cream, the bridal colours. The bride, who was given away by her father wore a model gown of magnolia satin, cut in long-fitting lines and falling away in a graceful circular train. The sleeves were tight fitting and formed a point over the hands. The front of the bodice was shirred into a heart-shaped neckline finished with a spray of orange blossom buds. She wore a hand-embroidered tulle veil which was lent by a friend and which fell from a waterfall halo of orange blossom buds. She carried a shower bouquet of cream roses, abutilons and scabious with trails of maiden-hair fern. The bridesmaid was Miss Zeta Iremonger, a friend of the bride, who wore an early Victorian frock of azure blue silk net over satin supreme. The bodice was plain, finished with a heartshaped neckline which was complete with ribbon and posy similar to that on the skirt. The full puffed sleeves were also finished with ribbons and a posy. The full skirt was banded with satin ribbon of the same shade, each band coming into a point in the centre front where it was finished with a posy of blue rosebuds and silver leaves. A similar posy was worn in her hair, edged with pleated tulle, and she carried a bouquet of cream and pink abutilons and blue sweet peas with silver streamers.
The flower girl, Yvonne Dore, a neice of the bride, also wore a frock of azure silk net and a posy in her hair to match. She carried a Victorian posy of cream chrysanthemums, roses and sweet peas.
The best man was Mr L. Taylor and the ushers were Messrs F. J. Hoddinott and C. Taylor. A reception was held at Elmwood Garden, where the guests were received by Mrs Hoddinott, who wore a model frock of oriental silk in nut brown relieved with beige georgette pleatings at the neck, and a brown velour hat with ostrich plume. Her shoulder spray was of cream abutilons and maidenhair fern. She was assisted by Mrs Birss, who wore a wine frock trimmed with silver lame and a wine felt hat. Her shoulder spray was of gold abutilons and maidenhair fern. During the reception items were given by Miss Z. Iremonger and Mrs Dore (songs), Miss Miller (recitation) and Mr J. Lilley (song). For travelling the bride wore an autumn brown tailored suit with velour hat and accessories to match.
