ONE KILLED AND TWO INJURED
MOTOR CAR LEAVES ROAD VEHICLE COMPLETELY WRECKED (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 15. One man was killed and two were injured when a motor-car left the Pahau-tanui-Haywards road about 10 o’clock last night, about one mile from Pahautanui. They were:— KILLED Peter Imlay Frederick Saunders, aged 25, an accountant of Grant road, Wellington, a son of Mr Imlay Saunders, of Wanganui. INJURED Jack Shelly, company manager, the owner of the car. Sidney Archibald Wiren, solicitor, both of Wellington. The party was thought to be returning from Wanganui. The car was completely wrecked. It is understood that Wiren was driving. Neither he nor Shelly is in a serious condition. Saunders was employed by a public accountant in Wellington and he received his public accountant’s certificate only last week. He was a well-known member of the Star Boating Club and the Hutt Golf Club. ELECTRICAL WORKER INJURED CRUSHED BETWEEN END OF CRANE AND PILLAR (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 15. Crushed between the end of an electric travelling crane and a concrete pillar jutting from a brick wall, Noel William Eden, aged 23, an electrical worker of Ponsonby, suffered extensive injuries today when working on business premises in Fanshawe street. Part of a hollow brick wall had to be removed to free him. He was then placed in an ambulance sling and lowered 20 feet to the ground where he received medical attention and was sent to hospital with a fractured rib and wrist and flesh wounds. His condition is fairly serious.
FARMER FOUND DEAD (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 15. With a gunshot wound in his chest, a Papanui farmer, David James Phillips, aged 54, was found dead by his wife in a paddock on his farm yesterday afternoon. The body was lying beside a fence in which the gun was caught. Phillips had farmed in the Papanui district for the last 20 years. DEATH FROM INTERNAL INJURIES (United Press Association) TIMARU, May 15. James Gunn McVey, who was injured by a fall of rock at the Cave limeworks on March 20, died in the hospital at Timaru on Saturday night. He was the second victim of the accident which had previously caused the death of Eric Woods, who was buried alive by 1000 tons of rock. McVey at the time of the accident was working a tractor scoop, which was pushed by a rock a distance of 20 yards and then over a bank, at the foot of which McVey was hurled from the tractor a further 15 feet. He suffered severe internal injuries, which eventually resulted in his death. DRIVER OF CAR DIES FROM INJURIES (United Press Association) TIMARU, May 15. A fatal accident occurred about a mile from Fairlie on Saturday evening, the victim being Dennis Humphries Frederick Brosnahan, aged 29. He and two companions were returning from a football match at Fairlie when the motorcar, which was driven by Brosnahan, ran into a car which was pulled up on the roadside because of a broken petrol pipe. Brosnahan was thrown heavily against the steering wheel, suffering severe injuries in the chest and he died before medical aid arrived. His companions suffered only minor injuries. The driver of the stationary car, John Cresswell Harrison, of Winchester, was knocked over when the impact occurred but he escaped with minor injuries. MAN’S FOOT BLOWN OFF IN EXPLOSION (United Press Association) RUATANGATA, May 15. William Curry, employed at the limeworks at Ruatangata, had a foot blown off this morning when an explosic® occurred. CYCLIST DIES FROM INJURIES AUCKLAND, May 15. William Stephen Scott, aged 59, married, a cyclist, living at Otahuhu, died in the hospital this morning from injuries suffered in a collision with a motor-car at the intersection of Huia and Great South roads, Otahuhu, late yesterday afternoon. BURSTING HOSE CAUSES FRACTURE OF SKULL The bursting of a water-hose at a connection caused head injuries to James Bull, aged 17, of 178 Biggar street, yesterday. He was admitted to the Southland Hospital, Kew, and was found to be suffering from a fracture of the skull. His condition last night was satisfactory. ' FOOTBALL PLAYER BITES TONGUE While playing football in a junior game at Browns on Saturday, Cyril Brown, of Winton, bit his tongue so badly that it was necessary to insert three stitches. The accident occurred when a player tackled him and fell heavily on the side of his head. MAN SLIPS ON DOORSTEP John Richard Dunn, aged 51, of 65 Gala street, fractured his ankle yesterday when he slipped on a doorstep. He was admitted to the Southland Hospital, Kew, yesterday morning and his condition is reported to be satisfactory. FINGER CUT BY AXE Suffering from a cut tendon in a finger caused when he was using an axe, John Aitchison, aged 27, of Winton, was
admitted to the Southland Hospital, Kew, yesterday. KNOCKED OFF BICYCLE Francis Adamson, aged 21, of Morton street, Invercargill, suffered cuts to his face when he was knocked off his bicycle yesterday. He was admitted to the Southland Hospital, Kew. WOMAN’S BODY FOUND IN MOLYNEUX (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 15. The body of Christina Margaret Hyslop, aged 43, who had been missing from her home at Clydevale, near Balcltitha, since April 27, was found at noon today in the Molyneux river not far from the home. She leaves a husband and two sons. COUNTY COUNCILLOR’S SUICIDE (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 15. At an inquest today into the death of Joseph Cross, aged 63, of Portobello, farmer and county councillor, who was found dead on May 11, the Coroner .returned a verdict of suicide by, shooting. An inquest was also concluded today into the death of George Woodland, aged 67, who was discovered dead in bed on May 11. The Coroner found that the cause of death was gas poisoning.
