RETURN OF RHODES SCHOLARS

OBLIGATION GOVERNED BY OPPORTUNITIES (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 15. “New Zealand Rhodes scholars are morally bound to return to their own country only if there are opportunities awaiting them when they arrive,” said Dr W. E. Henley, a former Rhodes scholar, who returned by the Monowai. He was asked to comment on the statement cabled from Australia, which was reported to have been made in an interview, that he was returning to New Zealand because he felt Rhodes scholars were under a moral obligation to return to their own countries.

“That is only half of what I said,” stated Dr Henley. “I added that the obligation existed only if there were opportunities for them.”

He knew of several who had returned to the Dominion only to find there was nothing for them to do. Rhodes scholars seemed to return to the larger countries, including South Africa, Canada and the United States. A fair number was also found in the Commonwealth.

Dr Henley, who is accompanied by his wife and small son, has returned to discover whether opportunities exist.
