FATAL FALL DOWN MINE SHAFT

OFFICIAL SWEPT AWAY BY CRUMBLING EARTH MELBOURNE, May 15. When preparing to cover an abandoned shaft in California Gully, Bendigo, on Saturday, Mr Jack Rooney, an official of the Mines Department, was swept into the shaft when the earth crumbled at the shaft mouth. Gangs are working furiously to recover the body, but so far have been unsuccessful. It is believed that the body is 100 ft down. An opening of 20ft was made by the caving earth, which was dampened by recent rains.

Two of the rescuers had a narrow escape from injury today when from 10 to 20 tons of stone broke away about 40ft above them.
