GARDEN COMPETITION

To The Editor Sir,—l notice that the judge in this competition awarded points to the different exhibits. The full points awarded differed only slightly, but there were double the number of varieties in at least one exhibit. Perhaps the judge,

secretary, or person who revised the schedule a year or two ago could explain the discrepancy and explain how many varieties were in this exhibit, whether 12 (according to schedule) or more; also what constitutes a variety. At one time this was a good section, but because of the ruling conditions, old exhibitors have dropped out one by one until it has become the hunting ground of what are called “pothunters.” I think the Agricultural and Pastoral Association would be well advised to delete this section from its schedule, as it has never adhered to its printed rules and this class seems to be beyond it. This class was the centre of a good deal of criticism during the show session and some of the remarks were anything but complimentary.— Yours, etc., OLD EXHIBITOR. May 13, 1939.

[“I have received no official or unofficial complaint from exhibitors or the general public,” said the secretary of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association (Mr A. L. Adamson) when this letter was referred to him. “The exhibitors who entered for this class have the respect of the Show Committee and are not regarded as pot hunters.”]
