SMALL FORTUNES are frequently made from the growing and sale of fescue seed. This season was exceptionally good. Some handsome returns round Mossburn, Five Rivers and Riversdale brought in from £lOOO up to £6OOO in hard cash. The expense of growing and renewing fescue is negligible, once it is sown the renewing is done every 5 or 6 years by skim ploughing the land, after which the new crop grows up luxuriantly between the furrows, no topdressing, or liming being necessary. Here are some farms noted for the production of the highest grade fescue, 290 acres, 243 acres, 526 acres, 630 acres and 566 acres at various prices from £6 per acre. Good homesteads are on some of the farms and some have no dwelling houses, but the mortgagees are prepared to give very easy terms provided a purchaser will erect dwelling houses in place of deposits. Long torm mortgages are given in each case ar 4 1/8% interest plus a sinking fund of 1%.
