PANDINE WINS AGAIN

Southland Winter Meeting

PEONY ROSE LEADING WINNER

ALMA AND GALLEON BOTH BEATEN

Racing of a keen and interesting character was provided at the Southland Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday, when the 1938-39 racing season in Southland was brought to a close. Ideal winter conditions prevailed, the day being fine and the track providing good going, but holding. The attendance, however, showed a decrease, Saturday’s receipts amounting to £374/16/- as against £547/10/last year, a decrease of £172/10/-. The reason for this was no doubt the strong counter-attraction in the second day of the Forbury Park’s winter meeting at Dunedin. This decrease was also reflected in the totalizator turnover, this year’s return amounting to £13,056/10/as against £14,220, a decline of £1163/10/-. The meeting, however, should result in a financial success as far as the club is concerned.

Peony Rose put up an outstanding performance to win the Awarua Handicap, the chief event of the day. She has won most of her races from end to end, but on Saturday much different riding tactics were employed and she was kept in behind until the straight entrance was reached when she finished with a great burst to beat Alma and Galleon. It was a fine effort. Araboa scored one of the most decisive wins of the day when he outclassed the opposition in the President’s Handicap, on a track to his liking. The hack sprint was won by Hunting Chorus who came out later in the day and was narrowly beaten by Vanity Queen over a mile. Vanity Queen’s dividend of more than three parts of a score was the best of the day. ' PANDINE’S SURPRISE

The Ritchie Memorial Steeplechase was a first-class contest, in which the little-fancied Pandine won his second race on end. He gave a faultless display of jumping and outstayed Corban in the run home. Pink Robe made a successful debut as a hurdler when she won the Southland Hurdle Handicap in easy style. She jumped well right through and had too much pace on the flat for the others. The two trotting events were keenly contested, the respective winners, Safe Voyage and Drumoak, both recording useful performances and appear capable of winning in better company. G. L. Mitchell was fined 10/- for undue flourishing of his whip and looking round at the finish of the Invercargill Hamess Trot when he drove the winner, Safe Voyage. G. Barclay was fined £1 for being late into the birdcage to ride Sea Lady in the Myross Handicap. The respective owners of Cone Peak, in the Myross Handicap, and Straightdel in the Bluff Handicap, agreed to pay two riding fees for cancelling earlier riding engagements made. The meeting was excellently conducted and concluded well up to time. The secretary, Mr J. E. Cuthill, and his staff were ably assisted by the honorary stewards and the programme was concluded without a hitch. The starter, Mr T. Marshall, was again responsible for an excellent day’s work. The results were as follows:—
