WOMAN WHO HAD TWO “WIVES”

(Received May 14, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 14.

The remarkable case of a woman who masqueraded as a man for 51 years and had two wives was revealed when Annie Payne, aged 64 years, became an inmate of an old men’s home in the suburb of Lidcombe last week. Her sex was discovered when she was taken to the bath.

The woman, who lived under the name of Harcourt Payne, came to Australia from Derbyshire when she was 13. She immediately donned boys’ clothes and ever since has led the life of a man. She followed the occupations of labourer, traveller, tram conductor, rate collector and assistant town clerk.

Both her “marriages,” she said, had been happy. Her last “wife” died a few weeks ago.
