EXCITING RUGBY ON SATURDAY
Final First-Round Games
TWOPOINTS LOSS BY INVERCARGILL PLAYER ORDERED OFF FIELD The final series of games in the first round of the Galbraith Shield competition, played at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon, produced much interesting football. In the game between the two unbeaten teams, Pirates and Invercargill, a high standard of Rugby was played, and so keenly contested were the many bright exchanges which characterized the game that the result was in doubt until the last moments of play. Unusual enthusiasm was displayed by the big crowd of spectators, many of whom cheered almost incessantly and urged the teams on when there was the appearance of “willingness” in the play. Several forwards were spoken to by the referee on three occasions.
The game, in all other respects an excellent one, was marred by an incident early in the second half which resulted in F. McEwan (Pirates forward) being ordered off the field for alleged rough tactics. Pirates won by 13 points to 11 and as the team played for practically the whole of the second half with 14 men its win was meritorious. The playing conditions, with the exception of a strong, cold wind which blew from the west, were almost ideal, and all in favour of bright and open play. Rugby Park was in first-class condition, Results were: Pirates 13, Invercargill 11 Marist 6, Old Boys 3 Star 6, Bluff 3 POSITIONS OF TEAMS The positions of the teams at the end of the first round are:
