MEN’S HOCKEY
DRAW IN MAIN MATCH OF DAY COLLEGIATE HOLDS CIVIL SERVICE The main centre of interest in the men’s hockey matches at Queen’s Park on Saturday was the game between Civil Service and Collegiate. Collegiate held the Civil Service team to a draw, though it was not generally expected to do so. Each side scored three goals, but Collegiate had a territorial advantage for the greater part of the match. The trouble with Collegiate in the first half lay in its finishing off of movements in the circle. The forwards allowed themselves to become bustled and lost several chances. I. Campbell played a steady game as the Civil Service centrehalf, and kept the forwards well supplied with ball. The forward line was without H. Gray, centre-forward, and his dashing game was missed. The ground was in good order. ■ Hunt played in his usual steady style in Collegiate’s half-back line. Both and Martin also gave sound displays. The Central A-Central B match was really a picnic match for the A team, but the young Central B team often caught the older team unawares and made it work hard.
CIVIL SERVICE HELD TO A DRAW COLLEGIATE DOES WELL TO MAKE UP HANDICAP e Collegiate held Civil Service to a draw, the score being three goals all. The Collegiate team had a territorial advantage for most of the game, but it could not finish off its moves in the circle. The score at half-time was three goals to nil in favour of Civil Service, and Collegiate did well to draw level after being so far down. The teams were:
CIVIL SERVICE.—N. Jones, W. Barraclough, N. Burns, M. Keane, I. Campbell, D. Hardcastle, M. Walker, L. Anderson, H. Poole, C. Gray, H. Rennick.
COLLEGIATE.—N. Poole, C. Hodgson, N. Speirs, J. Melrose, Hunt, C. Martin, S. Mason, V. Poole, J. Waddell, E. Booth. s Civil Service began the game by Attacking. The forwards held the advantage for a while, but Collegiate soon got going. V. Poole made several runs that looked promising, but he was stopped each time before he became really dangerous. The Civil Service goalkeeper, Jones, had to jump for several shots, but he managed to keep his goal intact for the first half. H. Poole was first to score. He and Gray began a movement from one of Campbell’s passes and Poole tricked Collegiate’s goal-keeper. Civil Service 1. Collegiate O. Collegiate kept attacking, but try as they did, the forwards could not break through the Civil Service defence. H. Poole scored again soon after his first goal. The forwards got away together and outwitted Collegiate’s backs by good passing. Poole sent in the shot. Civil Service 2, Collegiate 0. Before half-time, C. Gray followed a drive into the circle and shot hard, making the half-time score: Civil Service 3, Collegiate 0. The second half was more in Collegiate’s favour. Civil Service Seemed to become tired, and Collegiate had most of the game in its hands. The forward line kept together better and the general combination improved. V. Poole Was prominent in the forward line, though he did not score. He made several attempts and looked dangerous on a number of occasions, but either he was stopped or his shots were deflected. C. Martin shot a neat goal from within two feet of the back line. It was a well-deserved goal from a difficult angle. E. Booth and S. Mason also goaled, making the final score: Civil Service 3; Collegiate 3 Messrs W. Purvis and W. R. Curwen were the umpires.
CENTRAL A TEAM HAS EASY WIN GAME NOT SERIOUSLY Contested Central A had an easy win over the same club's B team, but the score, five goals to two, was not a sign of the relative merits of the two sides. The game was played more as a picnic game than anything else, though it was a competition match. The Central B team, however, showed that it has some clever young players, and several times caught the A team unawares. The younger team lost many chances through bunching in the circle and crowding the ball, otherwise it might have added more goals to its total. I. D. Speirs (3) and T. Hennessy (2) scored for Central A and N. Brumby and G. Gunn shot a goal each for Central B. The teams were:— CENTRAL A.—P. Cook, K. Lythgoe, R. Field, H. Semmens, A. McLean, I. D. Speirs, Ritchie, T. Hennessy, Moffatt, E. Mullen. CENTRAL B.—Fredric, Hill, Lowe, Semmens, Lindsay, McKillop, McKenzie, Brumby, Gunn, Moen, Kelman. Messrs J. D. Gregg and J. Chisnall were the umpires. intermediate grade HIGH SCHOOL (2) V. CENTRAL (2) High School drew with Central in rather a ragged match, each side scoring two goals. Skelt and Speirs scored for High School. The umpires were Messrs K. Lythgoe and D. G. Hardcastle.
COLLEGIATE (9) v. TECHNICAL (2) Collegiate had all the better of its match with Technical and a rather onesided game ended with Collegiate seven goals ahead. Davidson, a newcomer to Collegiate, played an outstanding game, nings shot the other four. McNeilage
and Robertson scored for Technical. Tire umpires were Messrs H. Semmens and H. Rennick. EASTERN NORTHERN COMPETITION GORE B BEATS FRESHFORD Playing at the hostel grounds,. Gore, in the Eastern-Northern men’s hockey club competition Gore B beat Freshford by six goals to one. For Gore O. B. Dey scored four goals and L. Ferris two. C. Hurley scored for Freshford.
