WOMEN’S HOCKEY
MATCHES PLAYED AT QUEEN’S PARK GROUND HEAVY AFTER RAIN The Southland Women’s Hockey Association’s competition was continued at Queen’s Park on Saturday in fine but cold weather. The ground was fairly heavy after the rain earlier in the week, and had the effect of slowing the games up considerably. ExHigh beat Technical by five goals to two, and Invercargill was decisively beaten by Collegiate by five goals to nil.
EX-HIGH V. TECHNICAL
Ex-High beat Technical in a brisk forward game in which the winning team showed to advantage in the first half of the match. Technical rallied in the second half although not to the extent of taking command of the game, and with a little better combination might have succeeded in turning defeat to victory. The teams were: TECHNICAL: J. Warnecke, C. Birch, R. Watson, J. Piercy, E. Edwards, L. McDermott, N. Peacock, P. Hemmings, A. Shaw. O. Hemmings, J. Douglas. EX-HIGH: T. James, L. Fraser, J. Anderson, J. Livingston, K. Westerby, M. Forde, L. Purvis, O. Taylor, N. Valentine.
Ex-High attacked from the beginning and with a swift forward rush carried play into the Technical 25. Technical rallied and headed by A. Shaw the forwards found an opening and drove the ball to half way where play was held up for a while. Technical was unable to stave off the attack, however, and after several determined efforts the Ex-High forwards got away, and L. Purvis, who led the rush, scored. Ex-High 1; Technical 0. Ex-High attacked from the bully off and a nice passing movement carried operations close to the Technical comer where the defenders cleared with a nicely timed shot. The ball was intercepted by L. Fraser and play was once more concentrated in front of the Technical goal where, after a period of hard play in which Technical, made several desperate efforts to clear and
the attackers tried equally hard to break through, L. Purvis scored with a good shot. She was playing an excellent game, and it was not long before she scored another goal from a handy position just inside the circle. Ex-High 3; Technical 0. A fine effort by Technical followed, the backs sending the forwards away in a run which ended in A. Shaw scor- . ing. Ex-High 3Technical 1. A. Shaw was playing an outstanding game in the Technical forwards, and with a little better support she might have led her team to victory. A few minutes before half time M. Forde scored with a good shot, making the total: Ex-High 4; Technical 1. Ex-High still held the upper hand in the second half, but there were times
when Technical challenged its opponents’ ascendancy, and the Ex-High goal line was threatened more than once. Technical was combining better than it was in the first part of the game, and though Ex-High made many efforts to get through the defences the attacks were generally driven back. The Technical backs secured possession and sent A. Shaw away on a run from the half-way line where she scored from well inside the circle. ExHigh 4; Technical 2. A little while before the end of the second half M. Forde shot her second goal, and the game ended with the scores:
Ex-High 5; Technical 2. Mr H. Kelly was the umpire. INVERCARGILL V. COLLEGIATE In a hard game Collegiate showed its superiority over Invercargill by winning the match by five goals to nil. The winning team showed better combination in the forwards than Invercargill, which appeared to lack the cohesion it showed the previous week. For Invercargill, M. Kelly played an outstanding game, but her team showed a certain weakness in the circle where D. Gray’s experience stood her in good stead. Three of Collegiate’s goals were obtained by D. Gray and N. Wyllie and H. Goble scored one each. The teams were:
COLLEGIATE: R. Stables, P. Milliard, A. Bateman, H. Sandri, Z. Gough, M. McLeod, D. Matheson, H. Davies, N. Wyllie, D. Gray and H. Goble. ’ INVERCARGILL: F. Foulston, M. Kelly, M. Elliotte, P. Sinclair, D. Maddock, P. Hall, A. Sinclair, G. Tomlins, R. Hutson, H. Eunson. The Collegiate forwards showed their superiority to Invercargill from the beginning of the game, and kept their opponents on the defensive except for odd occasions when the defenders managed to break through and assume the aggressive for a period. Their efforts to score, however, were always
frustrated at the critical moment. Play was of a fairly rugged nature, and soon after the start D. Gray led a passing rush by the backs and goaled. Invercargill cleared from the bully off, but was unable to withstand another Collegiate attack, and a few minutes later another shot by D. Gray brought the score to: Collegiate 2; Invercargill 0. A brisk exchange of shots followed and the Invercargill forwards got away, but the ball was intercepted and a few moments later another goal was shot for Collegiate by N. Wyllie. The halftime whistle was sounded a few minutes later.
Invercargill put up a determined defence in the second half, and the game became a dour contest in which the Collegiate team battered persistently at the defender’s goal. Taking advantage of an opening D. Gray sent a shot accurately into the net, and a few minutes before time H. Goble scored, the final scores being: Collegiate 5; Invercargill 0. Messrs L. Holmes and H. Kelly were the umpires.
MATAURA A BEATS WYNDHAM B The women’s hockey match between Mataura A and Wyndham B resulted in a win for Mataura by six goals to nil. Mesdames C. Hunter and J. Maley were umpires. IN OTHER CENTRES WELLINGTON College Old Girl 3 beat Poneke 1. Hutt Valley 5 beat Technical Old Girls 1 1. Hutt United and Technical Old Girls II won by default from University and Training College.
