DESERTERS ESCAPE FROM LOCK-UP

RECAPTURED ON SUMMIT ROAD (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 11/ Joseph Stein, aged 18, and Friedrich Karl Drews, aged 17, deserters from the German ship Dortmund while in Auckland on April 12, escaped from the Lyttelton lock-up at 8.10 tonight. They were recaptured at 10.30 on the Summit road by a party of detectives from Christchurch. The men were being held in the lock-up so that they could be placed on the ship when it arrives at the port tomorrow from Port Chalmers. They were arrested in New Plymouth on April 14 and sentenced to two months imprisonment for deserting, a condition being that they were placed on the ship at Lyttelton.
