Farm Visited

NUMBER SUFFERING FROM INFLUENZA

About an hour and a-half was spent by the party of young farmers from. Nelson and Marlborough at the Winton Experimental and Demonstration Farm yesterday morning. The party was on its way to Queenstown After spending a day there it will leave on its return to Blenheim. The party made a tour of inspection of the area, but some of the members were suffering from the effects of influenza and some preferred to remain in the charabancs. On arrival the party was welcomed by the chairman of the farm committee (Mr John H. Thomson) and before being conducted over the farm was entertained at morning tea by the Lochiel Young Farmers’ Club, assisted by Mrs Kemp. Mr A. Stuart, of the Department of Agriculture, conducted the party over the area and explained the various trials in progress. Great interest was taken in the ryegrass trials and Mr Stuart explained that the carrying capacity of the uncertified ryegrass was six sheep to the acre and the certified ryegrass eight sheep to the acre. He explained that the farm consisted of 106 acres and at the present time was carrying 770 sheep. The farm was sub-divided into 30 paddocks and all were supplied with water by means of windmills. The turnip, club root, chou mollier and rape trials were also inspected by the visitors. ■

At the end of the visit of inspection one member of the party thanked Mr Stuart for his instructive explanations and dll those who had assisted to make the visit pleasant. He hoped that some day a similar visit to Nelson and Marlborough would be arranged by the young farmers of Southland. Mr J. M. Thomson, chairman of the Lochiel Young Club, said that the club was very pleased to meet the visitors and hoped that they were all enjoying their trip. Some boys from the Winton District « High School were also present at the farm to meet the visitors.

The party left Winton at 11.15 o’clock for Lumsden, where the members had lunch.

Arrangements were made for a trip on the lake by motor launch when the party reached Queenstown.
