GOLF

VON NIDA’S TRIBUTE TO HORNABROOK

AUSTRALIAN PLAYERS AT MASTERTON (United Press Association) MASTERTON, April 18. “He is a great golfer and is equal, if not superior, to any amateur we have in Australia,” remarked Norman von Nida, the Australian golf professional, who with- Eric Cremin, professional champion of Australia, played exhibition matches at Masterton today, when referring to J. P. Hornabrook, a leading New Zealand amateur. Von Nida and Cremin opposed K. Williams, the Masterton professional, and Hornabrook. The visitors won 2 up after a keen game in which the standard of play was at times particularly good. The Australians took some time to settle down and were 2 down at the turn for home. Then von Nida struck a winning patch. Hornabrook played the best golf of the four and he did the round in two under bogey. Von Nida went out in 39 and home in 36, Cremin was out in 39 and home in 38, Hornabrook was out in 34 and home in 37 and Williams was out in 39 and home in 41.

BASKETBALL

OPENING DAY TOURNAMENT SUCCESSFUL The opening day basketball tournament on Saturday was most successful, stated the president (Miss L. Hallamore) at an executive meeting of the Southland Basketball Union last night. Unfortunately, many players suffered minor injuries during the afternoon and one of the girls who had been injured would probably be unable to play again during the 1939 season. J. Cooper was granted a transfer from Exhibition to Makarewa.

V. Doogan (Exhibition) was granted a regrade from 2A grade to second grade. S. Braxton and M. Wilson (Bluff) were granted regrades from second to third grade, subject to clearances being received. Entries in the competitions were received from Technical, Bluff (2), Makarewa (3), Collegiate (4), Wallacctown, McKenzie’s, Exhibition, Clifton, Stuarts (2), Rata (4), St. Mary’s (3), Pirates (2). Preliminary arrangements about accommodation in Invercargill for northern teams taking part in the Dominion tournament were discussed. Suggestions were also made about a programme booklet for the tournament and sub-committees were appointed to go into these two matters. There were present Miss L. Hallamore, Mrs T. Noble, Misses M. Godward, D. Hutton, H. Cooper and Mr A. Kinross.

BOXING

LOUIS KNOCKS OUT ROPER IN FIRST ROUND (Received April 18, 10.15 p.m.) LOS ANGELES, April 18. Joe Louis, heavyweight champion of the world, knocked out D. Roper in the first round of a 10-round bout for the championship. The knock-out came after only two minutes 20 seconds. Roper was counted out while he was groggily attempting to regain his feet. A right to the jaw after a series of lefts to the jaw ended a farcical fight which was witnessed by most of the film actors, all of whom were violently in favour of Roper. '
