EXPENSIVE COURT FEES

FREDDIE BARTHOLOMEW’S FINANCIAL AFFAIRS

Freddie Bartholomew’s financial outlook is much better than Hollywood suspected. In the first place he is worth exactly 94,324.98 dollars (about £23,500), of which 73,125 dollars is cash. Secondly, his pay has been boosted from 1980 dollars a week to 2970 dollars, which, excepting Shirley Temple’s salary, is a record for juvenile stars. These figures were revealed in an accounting to the Supreme Court by his Aunt Cissy. Freddie’s parents had appealed to the Supreme Court against a lower Court’s decision to recognize her as Freddie’s legal guardian. The appeal was denied. More than 80,000 dollars of Freddie’s good money has gone in Court fees in the last couple of years, and Judge Ben Lindsay, famous as a children’s Judge, is trying to force through a law to protect the earnings of child players from such inroads. Aunt Cissy told the Court that she had spent 46,680 dollars on behalf of Freddie in 1938. Chief expenses were: Motor-car, 2000 dollars; household expenses, 800 dollars (£200) a month, and attorney’s fees 15,000 dollars. She was allowed a guardianship fee of 1468 dollars, plus additional extraordinary fees.
