SHADOW FACTORIES IN BRITAIN

INCREASE IN PRODUCTION (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 18. The full production of the shadow factories was now making itself felt in Britain, said Mr L. C. Cunningham, export manager of Rootes, Ltd., London, when interviewed in Wellington today. Rootes, Ltd., have two shadow factories, one at Coventry, making aeroplane engine components, and one in the north of England, making complete air frames. “The factories were established about two years ago and their capacities have been more than doubled in the last eight or nine months,” said Mr Cunningham. “Shadow factories are built and equipped by the British Government and conducted by private firms for a management fee.” Mr Cunningham said that the work of the shadow factories was accomplished without interference with the normal commercial production of the industries concerned.
