THE LANDING ON GALLIPOLI

PARADE TO BE HELD IN CITY COMMEMORATION SERVICE IN THEATRE New Zealand will next Tuesday, April 25, commemorate the twentyfourth anniversary of the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps on the Gallipoli Peninsula. On Tuesday the gallantry of the men who became known as the Anzacs, their almost impossible task, and the cause for which they fought and died—the cause of peace—will occupy the thoughts of every New Zealander. In Invercargill, the customary parade and memorial service will be held. All Invercargill units will assemble at the Drill Hall at 1.30 p.m., and the parade, which will be commanded by Major T. Mathews, with Lieutenant A. R Cockerell, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C., as adjutant, will march to the War Memorial, where a short service will be held. The Ven. Archdeacon J. A. Lush will lead in prayer. The service is to be held at the back of the memorial and the parade will be drawn up on the reserve in Gala street so that the public will have a better opportunity than previously of seeing what is taking place. After the laying of the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association’s wreath, a general salute will be given, the Southland Regimental Band playing the salute. Public bodies and other organizations are invited to place wreaths after the official wreath has been placed. The public is requested not to place wreaths until the Returned Soldiers’ Association wreath has been placed on the memorial. When “Last Post” and “Reveille” have been sounded the parade will march through Dee and Tay streets to the Civic Theatre, where a commemorative service will be held. The principal speaker at this service will be Mr F. G. Hall-Jones. This service is for adults and no children will be admitted to the theatre.

The parade will be made up of the following units: Regimental Band; South African veterans, returned soldiers, Southland Regiment, Southland Boys’ High School trumpet and bugle band and cadets, Southland Technical College trumpet and bugle band and cadets, the Boys’ Brigade and the Invercargill Caledonian Pipe Band. A concert organized by the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association at which leading Invercargill performers will take part will be held in the Civic Theatre in the evening. On Monday afternoon representatives of the Returned Soldiers’ Association will deliver short addresses on the significance of Anzac Day to pupils of city schools.
