RACE FOR ANTARCTIC RESOURCES

AMERICA TO CONSOLIDATE CLAIMS (Received April 18, 6.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 17. It is understood that Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd and Mr Lincoln Ellsworth have been asked to consult the United States Government about plans for an official expedition to the South Polar regions to fasten down American claims to potential resources in the region, for which an international race is developing. A prominent member of the Government explained: “Sooner or later there must, be a conference to settle the question of international claims in that region. Britain, Germany, France. Norway and virtually every other nation are claiming something. The State Department has never recognized those claims, and we want to fasten down our jurisdiction and obtain all possible data.”
