Gradual Improvement

(Special to The-Times) WELLINGTON, April 18. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland issued by the meteorological office, Wellington:— Fresh, but decreasing southerly to south-easterly winds. Weather overcast and misty, with intermittent rain, but gradually improving. Temperatures cool. Seas rather rough to rough, but decreasing. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather overcast and with some rain south of Hokitika and Timaru. Elsewhere mainly fair to cloudy at first, but scattered light rains probable, with a southerly change. Temperatures becoming cooler. General Situation.—The pressure has continued to fall slowly over the Dominion, but is now rising over southeastern Australia. Winds.—Northerly to north-westerly at first north of Hokitika and Banks Peninsula, force mainly moderate, but strong in some exposed positions. A change to freshening southerlies advancing from the south. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rather rough to rough about Cook Strait and in the far south, elsewhere slight to moderate; eastern Tasman Sea, moderate to strong southerly winds, moderate to rather rough seas.

The weather in Invercargill yesterday was cold and wet. Steady rain fell during the morning and throughout the afternoon. The weather cleared in the evening, but the sky remained overcast and a thick fog developed. There was an absence of wind during the day.

The weather at one o’clock this morning was fine but there was a very heavy fog. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows:—

This morning (falling) 29.34 in. Tuesday 29.68 in. Monday 29.63 in.
