SCENIC RESERVE AT FOREST HILL
IMPROVEMENTS PROPOSED FOR THIS YEAR
The work done on the Forest Hill scenic reserve last year and works proposed for this year were discussed in a letter received by the general committee of the Automobile Association (Southland) at its meeting last evening from the Forest Hill Scenic Board. The board asked for financial assistance, and it was decided that the association should give £5 to assist in carrying out the proposed improvements. The letter stated: “The board is entirely dependent on donations and last year substantial improvements were made from funds received as voluntary contributions. With the co-operation of the Southland County Council and by using Scheme No. 13, a track was formed to the hill top, three fire places were erected, a small dam built for a water supply, the road to the bush metalled, a parking place and motor turn formed and direction notices erected. The programme of work for the coming year consists of further improvement in the accessibility of the reserve to the public. The end of the road touching the reserve is to be fenced and a turn-stile and stile are to be erected. This will prevent cattle from wandering in the reserve, and additional tracks are to be made, giving access to a beauty spot of one acre and a-half of ferns. The present track is to be formed for the first 20 chains and the trees on the top of the hill are to be topped to form an outlook. Seats will be erected at suitable places on the track. It is felt that the board’s work will be greatly appreciated by the members of your association and I shall be grateful if you will place this matter before your council.”
