MANY PERSONS REGISTER

REQUIREMENTS UNDER LEGISLATION BUSY PERIOD AT POST OFFICE Applications by women, youths and girls over the age of 16 years, and former pensioners for registration under the Social Security Act have been received at the Invercargill Post Office at the rate of about 300 a day and already about. 5000 registrations have been made. The Money Order and Savings Bank branch of the office has been extremely busy and a greater tush is expected towards the end of the month as registration must be completed by April 30. The majority of the persons registering has paid the levy due on May 1 at the time of registration to avoid the necessity for making a second visit to the office next month when there will be the usual great activity in the collection of the quarterly levy from men, and other charges which fall due during May. It is expected that it will be necessary to open rooms on the first floor of the office next month for the collection of the social security charges. Each applicant for registration must complete a form giving particulars of names, age and occupation and on filing this information the applicant is provided with a coupon book for the future payments of annual or quarterly payments. All persons 16 years of age or over are required to register, the only persons exempted, being totally disabled war veterans. Males who are already registered for unemployment taxation do not require to register again, but women, youths and girls 16 years of age or over, and pensioners must register before April 30. For youths and all females the levy will be 5/- a year, but for males over 20 years of age the charge is £1 a year payable in quarterly instalments of 5/-. With the payment of the first levy a return of income other than salary and wages for the last year must be filed.
