WOMEN’S DIVISION

MORTON MAINS BRANCH The Morton Mains branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held its annual meeting recently, Mrs Robertson presiding over a poor attendance of members. The annual report stated that the year had been a most successful one both from a financial and an instructive point of view. Demonstrations, talks, competitions, roll calls and so on had all helped to make the meetings pleasant and educational.

The branch had been represented at the girls’ educational week and the country women’s , week. Dress-making classes had again proved very popular, while the monthly baking and needlework competitions, although of very good quality, had not been well supported by members. During the spring months a flower show was held which proved to be a very successful function. The eighth birthday celebrations of the branch took the form of a social and dance. During October a garden party was held at the residence of Mrs A. H. Sheat. 1

A gift was sent to the Makogai Lepers’ Christmas Fund and articles received from the disabled soldiers were sold. Gifts were also forwarded to the ministering and general executive funds. The annual picnic was abandoned because of bad weather. Thanks are due .to all those who in any way have helped to make the past year a success. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs N. H. Jefferies; secretary, Miss E. Sheat; treasurer, Miss E. Withington; vicepresidents, Mesdames McNally, Sheat and Robertson; play-reading supervisor, Mrs Robertson; committee, Mesdames Smith, Edie, Fleming, Blackmore and Miss Coleman. The monthly competition, an orange cake, and a fanev coat hanger, was won by Mrs Robertson. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Smith and A. H. Sheat. WAIKIWI BRANCH The Waikiwi branch" of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held its annual meeting in the Waikiwi hall. There was a fair attendance of members. Mrs W. A. Robertson (president) presided. The annual report showed that the year had been a very successful one. The membership was now 39. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The president thanked the members for their loyal support and willing co-operation. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs W. A. Robertson; vice-presidents, Mesdames Wilson, Fosbender, Murdock, Nees, Hopkins; secretary, Mrs Waters; treasurer, Miss V. Robertson; committee, Mesdames McLeod, Steele, Harris; advisory committee, Mesdames Martin, Steele; sick committee, Mrs Young, Mrs McLeod; delegate to executive, Mrs R. Nees; Press correspondent, Mrs E. Broad; exchange table, Mesdames Myers and Haines. The best bloom competition resulted: Mrs Martin 1, Mesdames Waters and Steele 2 eq, Miss Steele 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Martin and Haines and Miss Steele. SCOTTS GAP BRANCH The annual meeting of the Scotts Gap branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the hall, Mrs J. C. Kane (president) presiding over a good attendance of members. A motion of sympathy was passed with the Marshall family. Miss Price (secretary), in presenting the balance-sheet, pointed out that the branch had had a successful year financially, there being a creditable balance in hand. The president imher report reviewed the year’s work and thanked those who had helped her in the past year. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Auld; vicepresidents, Mrs J. C. Kane, Mrs Flett, Mrs Burnett; secretary, Miss Price; delegates, president, secretary and Mrs J. C. Kane; competitions secretary, Mrs Reilly and Mrs Flett. On behalf of the members Mrs Auld presented Mrs Kane with a gift in recognition of» her valuable work as president. Mrs Burnett alsd spoke. Mrs Kane replied. The result of competition prizes for ' the year: Mrs Auld, Mrs Burnett, Miss Arnott, Mrs J. C. Kane. The competitions for the afternoon resulted: Best bloom: Mrs Flett 1, Mrs Patterson 2, Mrs Burnett 3. Posies; Mrs Auld 1, Mrs Flett 2, Mrs Price 3. WRIGHTS BUSH BRANCH

The annual meeting of the Wrights Bush branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the' Wrights Bush hall. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs T. H. Anderson; vice-presidents, Mesdames W. McKenzie, M. Cahill and Miss H. Pinchey; treasurer, Mrs F. Holroyd; committee, Mesdames A. Anderson, G. Leith, J. Ward, R. Perriam, G. Matheson, J. McCallum; delegates to executive meetings, Mesdames A. Anderson, R. Perriam, J. Ward; advisory board, Mesdames T. Anderson, G. Leith.

Prizes for most points during the year were presented as follows:—Most points all sections, Mrs A. Anderson; baking, Miss M. Miller. The competition for the month resulted:—Best bloom: Mrs M. Cahill and Miss L. Slaughter 1 eq, Mrs J. McCallum 2. Bottle preserved fruit: Miss M. Miller 1, Mrs R. Perriam 2. Mrs W. Lindsay (Wallacetown) gave a talk on preserving fruit and jam making. A vote, of thanks was proposed by Mrs T. (Anderson.
