Professor R. Lawson, M.A., D, Litt., professor of education at the University of Otago, will visit Invercazrgill on Friday and that evening will deliver a public address in the Rosewood tea rooms on “The Meaning of Philosophy and Some of its Problems."
Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., of Wellington, arrived in Invercargill yesterday afternoon. He will preride at the sittings of the Magistrate's Court this week in the absence of. Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., who is ?<t present on annual leave.
Mr E. A. Hargreaves, district traffic manager of railways at Invercargill, leaves today for Wellington on annual leave. Mr R. J. A. Stirling, assistant district traffic manager at Dunedin, who will act as district traffic manager at Invercargill during Mr Hargreave’s absence, arriv/ed in the city by the midday express yesterday. Mr A. W. Jones returned in the Tamatea yesterday after a holiday spent at Stewart Island.
Mr J. M. Smith, fields superintendent of the Department of Agriculture, Dunedin, arrived in Invercargill by the midday express yesterday and left later in the afternoon for the north.
Mr W. A. Pickford, manager of the Government Tourist Bureau at Invercargill, left yesterday to visit the Milford track on departmental business. He is to return on Saturday. Mr B. J. Smith, who has for four JTears been on the staff of the Invercargill Sports Depot, has resigned from that firm to take up a position with A, and W. Hamilton, sports dealers, Esk street.
Mr A. J. Deaker was elected president of the Britannia Badminton Club at the annual meeting last night.
Mr W. L. Crawford, of the Invercargill staff of the Bank of Australasia, who has received notice of his transfer to the Christchurch branch of the bank, will leave Invercargill about the end of next week.
Mr C. W. Birch was elected president of the Otago Golf Club at the annual meeting on Saturday night, and Mr J. A. Scouller was elected captain. Mr S. K. Sleigh was elected a life member in recognition of his long membership and service on the committee.
The appointment of the assistant superintendent of reserves, Mr M. R. Skipworth, to the position of superintendent on April 1, 1940, when the superintendent, Mr D. Tannock, will retire, was approved at a meeting of the Dunedin City Council last night.—Press Association.
