WINTON

CRICKET CLUB AVERAGES HEADED BY SCHOOL BOY The secondary school boy, J. Wood, has again proved himself to be _ the outstanding all-rounder of the Winton Cricket Club, heading both the batting and the bowling averages for the second year in succession. His total of 479 runs is a record for the club in competition fixures. The leading averages for the season are as follows: —

CROQUET The championships and competitions of the Winton Croquet Club have been completed. The singles championship was won by Mrs J. Mcllwrick and Miss K. B. Gilmour was the runner-up. Mrs Mcllwrick and Mrs J. B. Melton won the doubles championship after contesting the final with Mrs M. Reilly and Mrs W. Balch. Mrs Mcllwrick also won the handicap singles, Miss Gilmour again being the runner-up. The December doubles went to Miss Gilmour and Mrs Melton, who beat Mrs A.'Gerrard and Mrs Balch in the final. Mrs W. H. J. Shaw and Mrs E. Watt were the winners of the March doubles, the runners-up being Mrs Mcllwrick and Mrs W. Shand. Mrs P. Boylen and Mrs C. M. Lindsay contested the final in the first year singles and Mrs P. Boylen was the winner. PERSONAL Mr R. J. Souness, of Wellington, and formerly of Winton, is at present spending a holiday in Winton. OHAI TEAMS’ CUP WON BY OHAI SCHOOL WESTERN DISTRICT COMPETITION I The Athletic Society Cup was won by the Ohai school team with a total of 29 points. Wairio was second with 13 points and Nightcaps third with tjrree points. The cup, which was presented by the Ohai Athletic Society for Western District primary schools teams competition is a handsome trophy which will be competed for annually. On this occasion only the Ohai, Wairio and Nightcaps schools entered the competition but the standard of athletics provided was high. The running of G. Guttery and J. Smeaton (Ohai) was of a high standard. These two runners clearly showed their superiority in the events in which they competed. Guttery also won the high jump. Bamsfield (Wairio) showed good form in winning the 350 yards. An energetic band of officials, under the leadership of Mr James Mair, quickly despatched the events. ( ENTERTAINING CONCERT A most spectacular and entertaining concert was staged by Miss P. Mclntosh and her pupils. .Many novelty items were presented, including tap dancing and pianoforte items. Many beautiful and appropriate costumes were worn in the dancing items which added to their interest. Mr A. H. Guttery acted as stage manager. The programme was as follows:— Lambeth Walk, senior girls; pianoforte duet, J. Craig and N. Colquhoun; dance duo, tiny tots; Mickey Mouse song and dance, juniors; pianoforte solo, P. Mosley; duet, Pearl Ross and Margaret Muir; pianoforte solo, C. Murray; song and triple tap, L. Murray and senior girls; pianoforte duet, J. Mills, M. Nisbet and R. Church; navy scene, senior pupils; pianoforte duet, Phyllis and Jack Drain; Spanish ballet, Joy Baird and senior girls; pianoforte double duo, C. Raffle, Violet Woodhouse, C. Murray and Ruth Church; “Shoe Shine Boy,” senior girls; Dutch scene, N. Colquhoun and juniors; pianoforte duet, P. Ross and Miss McIntosh; single tap ballet, junior pupils; pianoforte duet, N. Colquhoun and B. Lowrey; operatic ballet, Joy Baird and senior girls; pianoforte solo, C. Raffle; tap duo, Joy Mills and Joy Baird; closing chorus.

TOKANUI PLUNKET SOCIETY The first annual meeting of the Tokanui sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Tokanui hall. There was a good attendance. During the year at Tokanui Nurse Mclntyre visited 29 homes and 100 adults, 90 babies and 14 older children visited the rooms. At Haldane 28 homes were visited and 17 adults and 20 babies visited the rooms. Appreciation of the work of Nurse Mclntyre was expressed by the committee. The committee also expressed appreciation of the courtesy of Mesdames L. McEwan and E. Frewin in placing their homes at the disposal of the nurse. The report of the secretary showed a balance of £l2 10/-, which was considered satisfactqry. The following committee was elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mrs J. Blair; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. Heatherington and N. Mclntosh; committee, Mesdames C. McEwan, A. Wybrow, R. E. Jennings, C. Humphries, J. McGarvie and Miss N. Urquhart; hon. secretary, Miss N. Casey.
