DEFAULTER AND AJAX WIN

Randwick Carnival Ended

NEW ZEALAND COLT ACCLAIMED

MALAGIGI SUCCESSFUL IN LAST RACE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received April 16, 7.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 15. On the last day of the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn carnival at Randwick on Saturday, the New Zealand horses Defaulter and Malagigi again won well. Defaulter’s brilliant performance in leading the field for two miles and winning the A.J.C. Plate (two miles and a-quarter) from worthy opponents, including Spear Chief, Mosaic and Allunga, was acclaimed all over the course. Malagigi snatched a smart victory in the Final Handicap after he began badly and was pocketed at the home turn.

Ajax had no difficulty in accounting for his five opponents in the C. W. Cropper Plate, including Gold Rod. Ajax’s winnings now total £31,100-

The attendance on Saturday was 33,000 compared with 31,000 last year. Frank Roberts, the trainer, told The Sunday Sun that Defaulter had fulfilled every expectation. He emphasized that Defaulter had ample room to stretch out, whereas in his two previous starts at Randwick he had been “given a rough spin” by other horses and had indeed been so severely knocked about that Roberts instructed the rider on Saturday to take Defaulter to the front and stay there. L. J. Ellis did that, and at one stage had a lead of five lengths on the field. Defaulter is described in the Sunday Press as the best three-year-old, the best weight-for-age and the best stayer at the Randwick meeting, and Ajax as the best sprinter and the best four-year-old. High Caste, with Reading, shares the juvenile honours. Defaulter will return to New Zealand next Friday and will come back to Australia for the spring meetings. Results:—
