Lindsay, who beat Miss T. Valli, 6-4, 6-3, in toe final played on Saturday afternoon. Miss Lindsay proved the steadier of toe two and with forceful driving beat her opponent with clever placement shots. Miss Valli did not appear to be playing up to her usual form and made many mistakes. The first set was fairly evenly contested and Miss Lindsay was first to score. The scores were even after four games had been played, but from then on Miss Lindsay was always in toe lead. Miss Lindsay won toe first two games in toe second set and by steady play brought toe score to 5-2. Miss Valliwon toe next game, but with good placing Miss Lindsay took toe final game. The tennis on toe whole was not up to toe standard usually seen in toe final of toe women’s championship, but a fairly strong wind which was blowing at toe time affected both players to a certain extent

Miss Lindsay lost only one set during toe championship games and that was in the semi-final against Miss E. Pierce, last season’s winner. This match was easily toe best in toe competition and both players had been fully extended. The scores on that occasion were, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. This is Miss Lindsay’s first season at club tennis and she is a member of toe Winton team which competed in toe A grade competition in Invercargill. Only 16 years of age, she is regarded as one of toe most promising young players in Southland. As a member of toe Southland Girls’ High School she won toe senior girls’ singles championship for secondary schools recently held at Invercargill and coupled with Miss Beryl King also won the doubles championship on that occasion. Miss Lindsay is a daughter of Mr G. Lindsay, who has been a notable tennis player over a period of many years and is perhaps one of toe oldest players in Southland. As a member of toe Winton Club Mr Lindsay has compiled a record for singles championships which may never be equalled in toe history of the club. On 15 occasions Mr Lindsay has held toe title, 13 years in succession. Last season Mr Lindsay was runner-up to G. Hamilton while toe previous season was toe first time he had not competed for toe title in 16 years. On that occasion his son, Frank Lindsay, was toe winner. MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP Quite a surprise was created at toe Winton tennis courts during toe weekend when G. Lindsay was beaten by R. Horsburgh, 0-6, 4-6, in toe second round of toe men’s singles championsip. Horsburgh proved much fitter than his opponent and won toe first set very easily. The second set was more even, but fitness again told on toe part of Horsburgh, a young player. - The men’s championship has reached an interesting stage and in toe semifinal R. Horsburgh meets G. Hamilton, last season’s winner, and G. Horsburgh plays F. Lindsay, toe previous season’s winner.
