SPLENDID OPENING OF SEASON I MANY EXCITING GAMES IN I TOURNAMENT j The 1939 basketball season shows promise of being toe best for some years, if the standard of play in the opening tournament, held on the Waihopai courts on Saturday afternoon, can be taken as any indication. Players quickly adapted themselves to the new rules and the standard of play was high, both in toe senior and junior sections. In the senior section, Rata I, Southland Girls’ High School, Technical II and Collegiate II reached the semifinals after some hard games, most of which provided toe good crowd of spectators with even and exciting contests. In toe final, Technical 11, with a handicap of four points, beat Rata by 10 goals to seven. In toe senior consolation round Rata met Southland Girls’ High School in the final, which was drawn, six-all, after a strenuous game. A good standard of play was also seen in the junior section, and here again there were many exqiting games. The 'final was won by the Collegiate fourth grade team, which beat the Bluff third grade team by eight goals to seven. Results: SENIOR GAMES S.G.H.S. 15 beat Rata II 11.
