Changeable with Rain

(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, April 16. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland issued by the meteorological office, Wellington:— Moderate to strong winds between north-west and south-west, reaching gale force at times in exposed positions. Weather changeable with occasional rain. Temperatures moderate. Seas rather rough to rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather mainly cloudy to overcast. Rain at times in districts with a westerly aspect, more especially of the South Island, and also in Otago and Southland; elsewhere little rain likely. Temperatures mild. General Situation. —An intense anticyclone is still centred near Chatham Islands and extends on to northern New Zealand, while a series of shallow depressions is advancing across the Tasman Sea and the South Island. Winds.—North to west prevailing, moderate to strong south of New Plymouth and Napier and reaching gale force in some exposed positions; light to moderate in the north. Seas. —In New Zealand waters rather rough to rough south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits; elsewhere slight to moderate. In the eastern Tasman Sea winds between north-west and south-west, moderate mainly, but freshening at times, also moderate to rough.

The weather in Invercargill during the week-end was fine and warm. Rain fell on Saturday night and early on Sunday morning, and a strong north wind blew yesterday afternoon. At one 'o’clock this morning the weather was mild, although a slight northerly wind was blowing. The barometer readings for this morning and Saturday and Friday morning? have been as follows: — This morning (falling) 29.63 in. Saturday 29.86 in. Friday 30.09 in.
