TWO KILLED IN ACCIDENT

HIT-AND-RUN MOTORIST MAY BE INVOLVED (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 16. A motor-cycle accident which resulted in the death of a young man and girl and in which a hit-and-run motorist is suspected of being implicated occurred on Dukes road, near Mosgiel, about midnight on Saturday. The accident was not discovered until 8 a.m. yesterday when the bodies of the two victims were found lying at the side of the road beside the motor-cycle.
The victims were:— Neil Harris, aged 24, of 136 Pay View road, Dunedin; and Vera Thomson, cged 22, employed at Wakari hospital. When the tragedy was first discovered it was thought that it was the result of the motor-cycle having skidded, but further investigations revealed that it could have been the result of a hit-and-run accident. A large body of detectives, assisted by Chief Traffic Inspector McDowell and Inspector Sutherland began a searching inquiry, but up to a late hour tonight no arrest had been made. It is understood that the victims of the accident 1 were engaged to be married. CAR CRASHES INTO POLE DRIVER KILLED AND TWO INJURED (United Press Association) HASTINGS, April 16. When the car in which they were travelling left the road on a curve at Waiohiki, near Taradale, at one o’clock this morning and collided with a telephone pole, the driver was killed and two passengers were injured. The victim was: KILLED Percy Stanley Lowe, aged 21, of Hastings. He suffered extensive injuries from, which he died almost immediately. INJURED Jack Thear, aged 23, of Hastings; and Hector Smith, aged 28, of Elsthorpe. Both suffered head injuries and abrasions. They were admitted to. the Napier Public Hospital and were discharged this morning. The terrific force of the impact tore the side from the car, which was almost completely wrecked.
RIDER DRAGGED BY HORSE AND KILLED WIFE ATTEMPTS TO HEAD OFF BOLTING ANIMAL (United Press Association) , GISBORNE, April 16. A tragic accident occurred near Whatatutu on Saturday afternoon resulting in the death of Clifford Smith, aged 28, a married man, manager of Mr G. M. Newman’s property at Oil Springs Creek. Smith was thrown from his horse and killed. A distressing feature was that the accident was witnessed by his wife who was powerless to help. Smith and his wife were watering their horses at a .waterhole and Smith’s horse drew back suddenly from the bog throwing the rider who was caught in the stirrup and dragged for half a mile downhill. His wife unsuc T cessfully tried to head off the bolting animal.
SECOND VICTIM OF ACCIDENT PEDESTRIANS STRUck BY CAR • (United Press Association) WANGANUI, April 16. The death occurred at the Patea hospital on Saturday of Mrs H. Ellis, wife of Mr M. Ellis, of Waverley, as a result of injuries received when she was struck by a motor-car on the main road near Waverley on Wednesday. Mrs Ellis was the second victim of the accident in which she and her brother-in-law, William Ellis, were struck by a car while walking on the road. Ellis died before he was admitted to hospital. INJURIES TO RIBS FOOTBALLER ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL Gerald Silvester, aged 30 years, was admitted to the Southland Hospital, Kew, on Saturday afternoon with injuries to his ribs, suffered when he was playing football at Bluff. His condition is not serious.
