CITY GUARDS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP I FIRST STAGE FIRED ON I SATURDAY I The City Guards Defence Rifle Club ; fired the first stage of the club ch am- , pionship and completed the Padget i Cup competition in good conditions on Saturday. Ten shots were fired at 309, 500 and 600 yards. The shooting was of a high standard. ~ , At 300 yards three members scored 49 out of the possible 50, J, Buttolph with a seven-bull finish, 5 5 4 5 5 55 5 5 5-49, counting out B. Broomfield, 555554555 5-49, and W. J-Mur-ray, 555555545 5-49. J. B. Doake followed with 48, Mrs Doake being next with 47. The scoring was excellent at 500 yards, the top 10 scorers averaging 48.1 out of the possible 50. J. B. Doake and W McChesney 'headed the list with the possible 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5-50. A 49 was registered by V. Mathieson and 48’s by Mrs Doake, •>. Tansley, J. Buttolph and L. McDougall. At 600 yards J. Tansley was in fine form and placed his 10 shots within the 18-inch bull for the possible 5’ 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5-50. W. J. Murray was second with 49, his ninth shot being just over the bulls-eye ring. V. Mathieson and D. Wishart filled the next two places, each scoring 47. Murray neaded the list for the aggregate over the three ranges with the fine total of 49, 47, 49-145 out of the possible 150. J. B. Doake followed closely with 48, 50, 46144, and Tansley filled third place with 45, 48, 50-143. The finish ,for the Padget Cup was close, three reaching the handicap limit of 286 for the two days’ shoot, the result being decided on the count back at the last 600 yards. V. Mathieson was the winner with a 55 5 finish for the last three shots, W. J. Murray second with a 5 4 5 finish and Mrs Doake third finishing 5 5 4. The highest score off the rifle for the six ranges was obtained by Murray, with 286, which prevented him using his handicap. Tansley was next with 283 On Saturday the club will fire a triangular match at Otatara with the Gore and Invercargill Defence Clubs. Following are the results:—

THE DEFENCE CLUB PARAWA CUP COMPETITION The final competition for the Parawa Cup was fired by members of the Invercargill Defence Rifle Club on Saturday afternoon in favourable weather. The ranges were 300, 500 and 600 yards, seven shots at each. The scoring reached a high standard, the highest 10 averaging 98? points a man out of the possible 105, which is an excellent club average. J. Keelty, one of the club’s tyro shots, put up an excellent performance by scoring possibles at 300 and 500 yards and 33 out of the 35 at 600 yards, totalling 103 out of the possible 105, a score which is seldom reached in club shooting. N. McWilliams, 101, and A. R. Wills 100, were the next best aggregates. At 300 yards Keelty’s possible headed the list, L. Lyall and N. McWilliams making At .500 yards A. R. Wills, J. Keelty and W. D. Henderson made the possible full score,. 35. J. Archer, N. McWilliams, G. Wilson and F. E. Mayhew also shot well for 34 each.

At 600 yards W. Milley and A. Pomeroy made no mistakes and placed their seven shots in the bulls-eye for possibles. A. R. Wills also shot well at this range for a six-bull finish, 34. Following are the full scores:—

MINIATURE RIFLE Association AMENDED RULES FOR COMPETITION At a meeting of the executive of the Southland Miniature Rifle Association the deputy-president, Mr W. I. Aitken, presided over the following members: Mesdames J. Robertson and J. B. Doake and Messrs G. Wilson, G. Cheyne, F E. Mayhew, J. B. Doake, H. McKay, W. T. Webb, J. Fallow, P. Mcßride, W. J. Blatch and the secretary, Mr A. Pomeroy. Mr Aitken extended a welcome to members, especially those who were attending their first meeting of the executive and he hoped that all would do their best to develop interest in rifle shooting in Southland. The question of 10 bull targets, as used by the Otago Association, was left in the hands of the president and secretary with power to act. It was decided that a member must fire in at least two representative matches before being entitled to a representative badge. . ( The secretary was instructed io send a copy of the amended rules for. the 1.C.1. Cup competitions and Times Shield to all affiliated clubs. It was decided to purchase a wreath for the Poppy Day service.
