COUSIN BETTY’S LETTER

hJly dear Cousins,

This week I want to jog your memories and remind you of two important things you seem to have forgotten. The first is rule number 7, which says, that all entries must be .in by the closing date set. For the past few week? I have been receiving competitions days late. The closing day is always a Monday, and in the evening Percy starts to work to mark entries, and the prizes are awarded then. So you see that stories and poems which come late are left out of the prize list. In future entries which arrive on Tuesday, that is, one'day late, will receive marks, but will not be published, and those coming later than that will forfeit all marks. I think you will agree that this is quite fair, my cousins. And now for the other point, one about which I am always speaking to you. It is Sally Staircase—please—please—try to be QUIET as you go up and down her back on visiting days. There are many other people in the building, and I do not see how they can possibly work while a herd of wild elephants stampedes up the stairs. If you could only be in two places at once, and listen to yourselves, you would realize what a noise you really do make. Do you think I am growling too much today? Perhaps it is best to get it all over in one letter, and choose more cheerful subjects next week. I am hoping for .numbers of bright suggestions in your entries on Monday. What would you do if you were Cousin Betty? Perhaps you will say “If I were Cousin Betty I would not have any rules, and would never growl at the Little Southlanders for making a noise or sending late entries.” However, I trust the stories will contain better suggestions than that. Have you made any more plans for theßazaar? Girls, remember that your visiting day next week is Wednesday, although we will be back to’the usual Tuesday the following week.

Your loving
